SUMMER PERCH
August 2, 2024Difficult pikes

This year's weather pattern, at least in the northern Italian regions, has been quite abnormal with the overly prolonged heat until the end of October and the heavy rains that did not spare even the large pre-alpine lakes: low temperature range, well above average temperatures even at night, and, to top it off, blinding brightness that certainly did not entice predatory fish to expand their windows of activity.
All these negative components caused me to collect a long series of empty outings without making a single catch; even though I frequented places familiar to me, even the most promising spots betrayed me by giving me resounding "coats" and great disappointments.
Finally, in early November, nighttime temperatures dropped sharply, allowing for a greater temperature range and also lowering water values, now more in keeping with late fall; all of which allowed me to scout my favorite spots on Lake Maggiore with a real hope of making a few catches.

My 2.40 m rod with casting power identified in the gr 15/40 range combined with the usual size 4000 reel gave me ample guarantees of reliability together with the home-made super braided line ASSO, l'8XPE Perfect Storm of thickness mm 0.15 of green color and the terminal of thickness mm 0.30 always ASSO, the SuperFluorocarbon, extremely resistant to abrasion and practically invisible in water.
Thus equipped, I tackled the lake using mostly as artificials the eternal but still very valid 9/11 centimeter Rapala CDs further weighted by me through a listlet of lead placed in the belly.
The fishing action involves the complete sinking of the minnow followed by a syncopated retrieve made of continuous jerks aimed at showing the silvery sides of the bait; in an afternoon of fishing with conditions that were finally suitable, I collected four attacks, two of which were successful with small pike that, however, sold their skins dearly before returning to their beloved lake.
The accompanying photos show the two young specimens that did not hesitate to gobble up my minnows with great voracity, evidencing a marked increase in predatory activity in view also of the impending winter already stingy with food.
As the season continues, it should be more likely to encounter some "over size" pike.
